Which Schools Require SAT Subject Tests?


It is always a good idea to check with the individual schools, because requirements change with time and can differ depending upon the program to which you are applying.

This is just a general list of schools to give you an idea of how many schools require SAT II's.  For a complete list or more detailed information go to:

American University (DC) Recommended for placement  Math II and Foreign Language
 
Amherst College (MA) SAT plus 2 Subject Tests OR ACT with Writing
 
Boston College SAT plus 2 Subject Tests of student’s choice OR ACT with writing
 
Boston University SAT plus 2 Subject Tests in different fields OR ACT with Writing 
 
Brigham Young University (UT) 
 
Brown University (RI) SAT plus 2 Subject Tests of student’s choice OR ACT with writing
 
Bryn Mawr College (PA) SAT plus 2 Subject Tests of student’s choice OR ACT (with writing recommended)
 
Bucknell University (PA) Not required, but will be considered if submitted
 
Carnegie Mellon University (PA) Required – options depend upon field of study

Catholic University (DC) Not required, but will be considered if submitted
 
Colgate University (NY) No Subject Test requirement
 
Columbia University (NY) Required
 
Cornell University (NY) Required – depends on school
 
Dartmouth College Required – 2 Subject Tests of student’s choice
 
Davidson College (NC) Recommended – Math II and another Subject Test of student’s choice

Duke University SAT plus 2 Subject Tests of student’s choice OR ACT with writing
 
Emory University (GA) Recommended

George Mason University (VA) Not required, but will be considered if submitted

Georgetown University (DC) Required – 3 Subject Tests (Writing portion of New SAT will NOT be considered) 
 
Harvard (MA) Required – 3 Subject Tests of student’s choice (variety is recommended) Haverford College (PA) 2 Subject Tests
 
Johns Hopkins University (MD) SAT plus 3 Subject Tests (recommended, not required) OR ACT with Writing
 
University of Mary Washington (VA) Strongly Recommended 
 
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MA) Required – Math I or II; Biology, Chemistry, or Physics; and a third of student’s choice
 
New York University Recommended – 2 Subject Tests
 
Northwestern University (IL) 3 Subject Tests recommended for all students, some required for certain programs
 
Oberlin College (OH) Recommended – 3 Subject Tests 
 
Princeton University (NJ) Required – 3 Subject Tests
